46 Million Americans Are “Binge Drinkers,” Study Shows
According to the 2000 National Survey on Drug Use and Health an estimated 46 million people were binge drinkers.
Seven million of this estimate were younger than 21 and this includes children as young as 12 years old.
Binge drinking is defined as having five or more alcoholic beverages in a row.
In addition, Partnership for a Drug-Free America says that more than six and a half million teenagers
reported abusing prescription painkillers like Vicodin or Oxycontin and another two million used stimulants such as Ritalin and Adderall without
a prescription.
Dr. Nora Volkow , the director of the National Institute of Drug Abuse recently stated that the total cost of
alcohol and drug addiction to society was estimated at $500 billion, which is more than the gross domestic product of over 200 countries in the
world.
In recent years there has been more of a movement to focus efforts on programs that get results. This
includes effective prevention and rehabilitation programs in communities to eliminate drug abuse as well as treatment in the correctional system
for drug abusing offenders to reduce recidivism.
The good news is that overall drug use among teenagers declined by 17 percent from 2001 to 2004, which means
that all is not lost and it is a great acknowledgement to individuals and groups who are working to end substance abuse throughout the
country.
